Visit Our Facebook PageIn response to the diversified development of society and the need for legal professionals, training is no longer limited to traditional legal education. The increasing international interaction and the diversity of social development have not only improved the legal system and the country's economic development, but nowadays, people need more than just law officers and lawyers; they also need all sorts of legal services. The Department of Law provides various professional courses, including Business Law, Public Law, Criminal Law, Anglo-American Law, International Law, Financial Law, Fundamental Law, and other related topics. The courses emphasize both Civil Law and Anglo-American Law, providing students with a dynamic learning environment and an abundant education to enhance their competitiveness.
Unlike traditional legal education, which overly emphasizes theory rather than lawyering skills, the Department of Law encourages heuristic education and provides balanced training on both knowledge and application. The case study method is applied in Anglo-American Law courses, building a solid foundation from the beginning of students' study and strengthening their abilities of critical thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, to promote legal knowledge and the spirit of serving others, Legal-aid Services and the Promoting Law-related Education Team are available for students to participate. Additionally, by taking part in various moot court and debate competitions, students can put what they have learned in class into practice and strengthen their integrating skills when facing all kinds of challenges.
To neutralize the effect of exam-oriented education on higher legal education, the Department has been diligent in course design. With innovative curriculum and solid legal training, we expect students to have the skill to integrate different fields of knowledge. Moreover, making the best of the convenient city campus, we also provide various master’s programs and legal courses, which help maintain our education quality and cultivate cross-disciplinary legal professionals.
Ever since the foundation of Soochow University, the Department of Law has valued the cultivation of international legal professionals; therefore, we are known for Anglo-American Law-focused courses that help develop students' global perspective and training in Anglo-American and International Law. Financial and International Law courses are often updated to meet academic developments in Taiwan and worldwide. Recently, the Department has signed various academic cooperation agreements with multiple renowned law schools in Asia, the United States, Japan, and Germany, improving multicultural interaction and cultivating multinational legal professionals.
The goal of legal education is to cultivate professionals to serve society. We expect our students to have the courage to stand up for justice and to believe in caring and contributing. The compulsory course on Legal Ethics (available since 1991), International Human Rights Law, and Theories of Human Rights are available for students. Legal-aid Services (founded in 1972) and the Promoting Law-related Education Team (founded in 1991) are designed to cultivate a mature character with essential professional ethics and a warm heart to contribute.
